The Philippines has expressed significant concern over China’s recent actions in the South China Sea, particularly regarding the deployment of its largest coastguard vessel within Manila’s exclusive maritime economic zone (EEZ). This development has raised alarms, as officials believe it is a tactical move aimed at intimidating local fishermen operating in this contentious region.
On Tuesday, Jonathan Malaya, spokesperson for the Philippines National Security Council, highlighted the gravity of the situation after a 165-meter (541-foot) Chinese coastguard vessel, known as the 5901, was observed approximately 77 nautical miles (142 km) off the coast of Zambales province. In response, the Philippine government formally protested the presence of this vessel and called for its immediate withdrawal from the EEZ.
Malaya characterized China’s actions as an alarming escalation of aggression, noting that the deployment is seen as a provocative and illegal step that threatens the sovereignty of the Philippines. To safeguard its fishing fleets, the Philippine Coastguard has also dispatched two of its largest vessels to the area in an effort to deter the Chinese presence.
Responding to Manila’s concerns, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, defended the coastguard’s activities, stating they are “reasonable, lawful and beyond reproach.” However, the Philippines National Maritime Council condemned these actions, asserting that China’s maritime forces are infringing upon Philippine territorial rights and disregarding both domestic and international maritime laws.
Tensions have notably escalated between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea, a region integral not only for fishing but also for international trade and navigation, with approximately trillion in annual commerce transiting through its waters. This long-standing dispute has roots in overlapping territorial claims, underscored by a 2016 international tribunal ruling that found no legal basis for China’s expansive claims in the area—a decision that Beijing has repeatedly dismissed.
As both nations navigate these diplomatic waters, the Philippines continues to advocate for the protection of its rights while reinforcing its commitment to international maritime law. The situation highlights the complexities of regional security dynamics in Southeast Asia.
