North Central Michigan College Unveils New Early Learning Center in Response to Local Child Care Needs

On August 19, 2023, community leaders, educators, and stakeholders gathered at the Petoskey campus of North Central Michigan College (NCMC) for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the college’s newly established Reggio Emilia-inspired Early Learning Center. This initiative marks a significant milestone in NCMC’s ongoing Child Care Initiative (CCI), aimed at developing a sustainable child care framework in the region to address growing demand.

The newly inaugurated NCMC Early Learning Center is designed to cater to infants, toddlers, and young preschoolers, providing a comprehensive early learning environment enriched by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. This approach emphasizes play-based and exploratory learning, coupled with opportunities for outdoor, nature-driven activities. The facility boasts state-of-the-art learning spaces, including an innovative outdoor playground that reflects natural landscapes, thereby promoting an educational model that fosters curiosity and engagement among young children.

Launched in 2022, NCMC’s Child Care Initiative responds to the increasing challenges associated with child care accessibility and affordability in the local community. The initiative aims to bolster both family support and local economic stability through the establishment of effective child care strategies. The Early Learning Center serves as a pilot program demonstrating a true-cost fiscal model that not only prioritizes high-quality early childhood education but also embraces the need for competitive wages for child care professionals. This is a notable shift in a sector often criticized for its inadequate compensation structures and high turnover rates.

Jennifer Wixson, the Early Childhood Education program coordinator at NCMC, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “We believe this center can serve as a demonstration site for what’s possible when a community chooses to invest in its children and its caregivers. We hope it inspires others to join us in building a system where every family has access to the highest quality care, and every educator is supported with dignity, compensation, and professional respect.”

Looking ahead, the NCMC Early Learning Center anticipates full enrollment by October 2023, reflecting the community’s need for improved child care solutions. Families interested in enrolling can find additional information, including waitlist options, on the college’s website.

The opening of the Early Learning Center marks a pivotal step toward addressing child care shortages in Northern Michigan, highlighting a community-focused approach to early childhood education that prioritizes both children and caregivers. As such initiatives proliferate, they may serve as models for similar programs across the nation, advocating for systemic change in child care provision.
