No-Cost Childcare Program Launches in Central Oregon, Aiming to Alleviate Severe Shortage
Central Oregon families struggling with childcare access can now benefit from Baby Promise, a no-cost childcare program designed to serve children aged six weeks to three years. The initiative, provided by NeighborImpact, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local communities, is actively accepting applications from families in the region, including the cities of Bend and Redmond.
The Baby Promise program addresses a pressing need within the community, particularly in a state where childcare options are limited and frequently face long wait times. Families enrolled in the program will receive not only childcare services through licensed providers for an entire year but also essential supplies such as diapers, wipes, and formula—all at no cost. This comprehensive support is intended to alleviate some of the financial burdens parents typically encounter.
Sydney Borchers, a Promise Specialist at NeighborImpact, emphasized the significance of the program, stating that such services are crucial in Oregon, where finding reliable childcare is often extremely challenging. A report from Oregon State University indicates that Central Oregon counties served by Baby Promise, including Benton, Crook, and Deschutes, are classified as severe childcare deserts for children aged 0-2 years. These categorization insights highlight the urgency of accessible childcare solutions in the area.
“Connecting families directly with childcare slots is a transformative effort,” Borchers said. “The process of searching for adequate care can be overwhelming, and being able to facilitate such connections is a significant achievement for our program.” By streamlining the application and placement process, Baby Promise aims to ease the burden on parents, allowing them to focus on other important aspects of life while remaining confident in their childcare arrangements.
In addition to providing families with essential resources, the program also offers support to childcare providers. Experts, including Instructional Specialists and Infant/Toddler Specialists, are involved in guiding providers throughout the duration of the program, ensuring a high standard of care.
Baby Promise is currently available in three key regions: Multnomah County, the Southern Oregon Coast, and Central Oregon. By targeting these underserved areas, the initiative strives to bridge the gap between the overwhelming demand for childcare services and the limited availability that many families face.
As the program continues to accept applications, community members are encouraged to spread the word and engage with NeighborImpact to foster increased awareness and access to these vital resources.
