A significant outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday disrupted a wide range of internet services, resulting in the temporary failure of numerous applications and platforms used by millions globally. The interruption began at approximately 07:11 GMT, originating from one of AWS’s largest data centers in Virginia, which is also its oldest. The issue arose following a technical update of the Application Programming Interface (API) for DynamoDB, a vital cloud database service that manages essential user information for countless online platforms. A malfunction in this update subsequently impacted the Domain Name System (DNS), the critical service that assigns numeric IP addresses to website names, ultimately preventing various applications from connecting to their intended servers.

In total, the outage negatively impacted 113 services, forcing a range of popular platforms—including banks, gaming services such as Fortnite and Xbox, and communication tools like Zoom and Slack—to temporarily become inaccessible. Although Amazon announced that normal operations resumed by 10:11 GMT, users experienced delays due to a backlog of processing tasks that required time to resolve.

Web monitoring service Downdetector reported ongoing issues with various platforms, including OpenAI and ESPN, showcasing the extensive reach of the outage. Multiple services, such as Duolingo, Etsy, and several major media organizations, were also notably affected.

AWS functions as a cloud service provider, allowing businesses to access remote computing power and storage rather than relying on local devices. Its vast deployment of resources facilitates the hosting of numerous websites and online services used daily. Despite the incident, experts suggest that AWS is well-positioned to recover. Joshua Mahony, chief market analyst at Scope Markets, emphasized the ingrained nature of AWS in the digital market, asserting that its extensive user base would remain loyal.

The incident highlights the risks associated with cloud computing, as outages can reverberate across multiple sectors due to the interconnected nature of these services. Amazon has confirmed that it is conducting a thorough investigation into the outage and plans to release a comprehensive post-event summary detailing the incident and corrective measures taken.
