Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has voiced strong criticism against Israel, accusing it of escalating air strikes in response to an invitation for negotiations. The latest incident involved an air strike that claimed the life of a man riding a motorbike in southern Lebanon. This unfortunate event marks a continuation of hostilities despite a ceasefire established in November 2024, during which Israeli military presence has remained in multiple areas and air strikes have persisted, indicating a notable breach of the truce.

In light of the ongoing violence, President Aoun’s call for negotiations follows a diplomatic effort by the United States, facilitated by former President Donald Trump, aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza. Aoun emphasized Lebanon’s readiness to pursue talks to end Israeli occupation. However, he noted that successful negotiations necessitate mutual willingness, stating that Israel’s actions indicate a lack of intent to engage peacefully.

The Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that an Israeli drone targeted an individual in the village of Kunin, resulting in one fatality and another injury. The Israeli military contested this narrative by asserting that they targeted a Hezbollah maintenance officer, allegedly involved in rebuilding infrastructural sites associated with the group in southern Lebanon.

In a separate incident, another strike struck a structure in the southern area of Nabatieh, causing audible explosions that incited panic among residents, although no casualties were reported. Such activities have heightened tensions in the region, prompting President Aoun to instruct the Lebanese military to respond assertively to Israeli incursions, reinforcing his stance on national sovereignty and the protection of citizens.

In recent remarks, Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem called for a more proactive stance from the Lebanese government in addressing Israeli actions and establishing national sovereignty. He advocated for an enhanced support mechanism for the Lebanese Armed Forces to better confront perceived Israeli aggression.

The backdrop to these developments is a significant period of conflict that began with Israel’s military operations against Gaza in October 2023, which has led to an extended period of violence. Reports indicate that Israeli air strikes since the ceasefire have resulted in civilian casualties, including the tragic loss of lives among non-combatants and journalists.

Amid these challenges, Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi has appealed to international partners, including Germany, to exert influence on Israel to halt its military actions, advocating for a diplomatic resolution instead of military engagement as the pathway to stability in the region.

Through these complex dynamics, Lebanon continues to navigate its sovereignty amidst external pressures and the profound impacts of ongoing regional conflicts.
