Buzkashi, recognized as Afghanistan’s national equestrian sport, involves elite riders competing to carry a leather-wrapped bundle across a designated goal line to earn points. Traditionally, this bundle was a goat carcass; however, contemporary matches utilize a weighted facsimile, ensuring the competition remains engaging while maintaining its historical significance.
As the participants navigated the dusty arena, a victor emerged, leading their team in a celebratory lap around the field, waving their flag in a display of pride and achievement. This year’s championship culminated in an impressive 7-0 victory for the northern province of Sar-e-Pul against northeastern Badakhshan, effectively concluding an 11-day national tournament filled with highlights of skill and sportsmanship. Baghlan secured third place, while Kunduz claimed fourth among the 11 provincial teams that competed in the tournament.
The event also welcomed eight international participants from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, further emphasizing the sport’s regional appeal and collaborative spirit. Corporate sponsorship from a petrol company helped fund the tournament, offering automobiles as prizes for the top four teams alongside trophies, medals, and certificates.
Thousands of spectators filled the stands at the central Kabul venue, with enthusiastic fans climbing trees and electricity pylons for a better view of the captivating matches, showcasing the community’s deep investment in preserving its vibrant traditions.
