Three soldiers from the Lebanese army sustained injuries while engaged in the critical task of defusing unexploded ordnance in Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, a village located in southern Lebanon. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local authorities amid rising tensions in the region.
Earlier on Saturday, local officials, including the village mayor, Abed Ezzeddine, and the National News Agency of Lebanon (NNA), reported that Israeli troops had entered the village and constructed an earth barrier overnight. The barrier was erected approximately 100 meters from the village square, surprising many residents who were not alerted to the military activity.
This recent development comes against the backdrop of an agreement established in June between Lebanon and Israel, which was intended to facilitate peace and security in the border region. A military source from Lebanon labeled the construction of the earth barrier as a breach of this framework accord. Conversely, the Israeli military claimed to be unaware of the developments in Zawtar al-Gharbiyah, illustrating a stark divergence in narratives concerning border security actions.
The deployment of the Lebanese army to Zawtar al-Gharbiyah on July 21 marked a significant step toward stabilizing the area, allowing around 50 families to return to their homes.
