Al-Shifa: A Tale of Aspirations and Shadows

When I began my nursing studies at Al Azhar University, my aspirations were firmly set on a career at Al-Shifa Hospital, the most renowned medical facility in the Gaza Strip. This institution has long been recognized for attracting some of the most skilled physicians and nurses in the region, in addition to hosting diverse international medical missions that provide training and essential care.

Al-Shifa Hospital, which translates to “healing” in Arabic, stands as a beacon of hope for many Palestinians seeking medical assistance, drawing patients from across the Gaza Strip. My journey in nursing culminated in 2020 when I graduated and initially sought opportunities in the private sector. Eventually, I was grateful to join Al-Shifa as a volunteer nurse, a role I embraced with genuine enthusiasm.

My passion flourished especially in the emergency department, where collaboration and camaraderie among the 80 nurses—a mix of women and men—became a source of strength. Friendships blossomed, particularly with colleagues like Alaa, a cherished companion known for her kindness and unwavering support.

However, the dynamics of our post-graduate lives shifted dramatically when conflict escalated. From the outset of hostilities, Al-Shifa became inundated with casualties, and I grappled with the emotional toll of witnessing such profound suffering. Within days, we were faced with an overwhelming influx of wounded individuals, compelling us to work tirelessly in an attempt to save lives.

The situation grew increasingly dire when I faced an agonizing decision: to join my family, who were fleeing to a safer location, or to remain with the patients who depended on my care. I chose to stay at Al-Shifa, which had become more than just a workplace—it was my sanctuary. Soon, however, the looming threat of evacuation began to materialize as the Israeli military announced plans to seize control of the hospital.

As we fought against dwindling medical supplies and escalating dangers, our will was profoundly tested. Heartbreakingly, I witnessed the loss of innocent lives, including precious newborns who succumbed to the dire conditions. Despite the adversity, our resolve to deliver care persevered.

On November 15, the situation escalated drastically when soldiers stormed the hospital compound, violating the sanctity of this medical facility under international protection. The chaotic scene that ensued left us feeling vulnerable and isolated, as we struggled to support the patients who had sought refuge within our walls.

After days without adequate food or water, we received orders to evacuate. Despite the heartbreak of leaving, many dedicated professionals, including myself, complied. While some defied the evacuation orders, I set out on a journey towards Rafah, filled with a mix of relief and sadness.

Upon reaching Rafah and reuniting with my family, the joy was soon overshadowed by tragic news of Alaa’s untimely death—an unimaginable loss that continues to weigh heavily on my heart. In the wake of the destruction, I now care for the ill in makeshift clinics, living in a tent with no immediate prospects for the future.

Yet, amidst uncertainty, I hold on to a dream: to one day witness Al-Shifa restored to its former glory. My commitment to the ideals of healing and compassion remains unwavering, driving me to envision a future filled with hope and resilience for my beloved community.
