Biden Faces Health Challenge: Undergoing Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Former President Joe Biden is currently undergoing a comprehensive treatment plan aimed at addressing prostate cancer, a diagnosis he received in May 2023. His spokesperson, Kelly Scully, confirmed that the treatment involves both radiation therapy and hormone therapy. This proactive approach not only highlights the seriousness with which the former president is treating his health but also underscores the importance of early detection and intervention in cancer care.

In a public disclosure made by his office, it was revealed that Biden is dealing with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. The diagnosis came after he experienced concerning urinary symptoms, which led to the discovery of a prostate nodule. Following his diagnosis, Biden took to social media to express gratitude for the support he has received during this challenging time. He stated, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”

Prostate cancer is recognized as the most prevalent form of cancer among men, as reported by the American Cancer Society. It carries a notably higher incidence among older men, with estimates suggesting about 80 percent of men over 80 years have cancerous cells within their prostate glands. Although prostate cancer is highly treatable if diagnosed early, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men.

Hormone therapy, an integral part of Biden’s treatment strategy, serves to reduce tumor size and inhibit further cancer growth. However, it is important to note that it is considered a treatment rather than a definitive cure. The aggressiveness of prostate cancers is classified using a Gleason score, which ranges from 6 to 10. Biden’s cancer has been rated at a score of 9, indicative of its aggressive nature while also indicating that the cancer may respond favorably to hormone-sensitive treatments.

At 82 years old, Biden is navigating these health challenges with resilience. In addition to addressing his prostate cancer, he recently underwent Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer lesions from his forehead. This dual focus on health demonstrates his commitment not only to his personal well-being but also to leading by example, advocating for the importance of health awareness and early cancer screening.

As Biden continues his journey through treatment, he remains a symbol of hope for many facing similar battles, reminding the public of the power of community support in overcoming health challenges.
