Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia – Participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla, passionately advocating for Palestinian rights and seeking to challenge the ongoing blockade of Gaza, remain unwavering in their commitment to their mission despite facing two recent attacks on their vessels. The incidents occurred at the port of Sidi Bou Said, with projectiles reportedly striking the boats on consecutive nights earlier this week. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, although participants expressed heightened concerns following these events.
Organizers of the flotilla have attributed the attacks to hostile actions, suggesting that drones were used in these incidents. While Tunisian authorities acknowledged the attacks took place, they indicated that no drone activity had been detected and have commenced an investigation into the matter.
Tara Reynor O’Grady, a prominent Irish human rights activist, affirmed the determination of the flotilla to proceed to Gaza. She emphasized the group’s focus on their objective, which is to break the blockade and establish a humanitarian sea corridor, highlighting the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. Hundreds of volunteers gathered in Sidi Bou Said on Wednesday, preparing for the eventual departure. Several boats from Spain had recently arrived, with additional vessels coming from Tunisia to support their cause.
The flotilla, aptly named “Sumud,” which translates to perseverance in Arabic, is currently in the preparatory stage before setting sail. Organizers intend for the first wave of vessels, which are considered seaworthy, to depart together towards a designated meeting point in the Mediterranean, where they will join forces with boats from Italy and Greece.
Furthermore, additional vessels are anticipated to arrive from Barcelona, and upon restocking and repairs, these will form a subsequent wave destined for the shores of Gaza.
Despite recent setbacks affecting two ships within the flotilla, notably the Family boat, which has hosted several members of the steering committee, including well-known climate activist Greta Thunberg, the resolve among activists remains strong. Irish comedian and filmmaker Tadhg Hickey, aboard one of the targeted vessels, described the attacks as distractions but urged the important focus on their mission to address the humanitarian issues arising from the blockade.
A member of the flotilla’s steering committee reiterated the team’s commitment to their cause, stating their intention to sail to Gaza irrespective of potential intimidation tactics. Participants have reported a mix of anxiety and anticipation, as family members express concern for their safety, highlighting the emotional toll of the endeavor. Despite this, many volunteers are eager to join the flotilla, with demand for spots on the vessels exceeding availability.
Yet, the spirit of solidarity and commitment remains alive among the activists as they prepare for their courageous journey to Gaza, underscoring the importance of humanitarian efforts in the region.
