Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee recently announced the establishment of an independent committee tasked with investigating the causes behind the city’s deadliest fire in decades, which tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 151 individuals and injured nearly 80 others. This announcement comes in the wake of a catastrophic blaze that swept through seven tower blocks in the Wang Fuk Court housing complex, home to over 4,600 residents, located in the Tai Po district.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Lee acknowledged the need for accountability and transparency in the wake of this disaster. He emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive investigation led by a judge, aimed at uncovering the truth surrounding the rapid spread of the fire and identifying factors that contributed to the tragedy. Lee stated, “We must uncover the truth, ensure that justice is served, let the deceased rest in peace and provide comfort to the living,” reflecting a commitment to addressing public concerns and ensuring such tragedies are not repeated.
The fire erupted last Wednesday amid maintenance work at the complex, with investigators suspecting that high winds and the utilization of substandard plastic mesh and insulation foam during renovations exacerbated the situation. Authorities are currently investigating claims that unsafe materials were mixed with approved products to pass inspections, alongside revelations that fire alarms within the complex were not functioning properly.
As investigators continue their work, they have reported that numerous residents were found deceased in stairwells and on rooftops, as they attempted to escape the flames. While the search has concluded in most of the affected towers, approximately 30 individuals remain unaccounted for. In an effort to address the situation, Hong Kong police have detained 13 individuals for suspected manslaughter, while an anti-corruption body has also made arrests related to the incident.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, it has been noted that residents of Wang Fuk Court had previously expressed concerns about fire hazards linked to the ongoing renovations. Despite addressing these issues, authorities provided assurances of “relatively low fire risks.” Recent tests on materials used during the renovations raised alarms as they did not meet established fire-retardant standards.
The community has come together in grief, and a significant call for accountability has emerged. However, the government’s response to peaceful demonstrations demanding improvement in construction oversight has raised eyebrows, particularly when police arrested several individuals advocating for action. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have voiced concerns about these arrests, calling for transparency from authorities.
