Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia, has been admitted to the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where her health has reportedly reached a critical stage due to a lung infection. The 80-year-old politician has been the subject of prayers and well-wishes from supporters and family members, who are hopeful for her swift recovery.
Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossein, Zia’s personal physician, spoke to the media on Saturday, confirming that she is currently in intensive care, following her hospitalization on November 23. Dr. Hossein emphasized that while her condition is serious, she is responding positively to treatment, which has provided a glimmer of hope for her family and supporters.
Supporters of Zia have gathered outside the hospital, expressing their concern and solidarity. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the Secretary-General of Zia’s Bangladesh National Party (BNP), echoed concerns over her condition, describing it as “very critical.” He, along with other party members, has called for continued prayers for her health.
Zia is well-known for having faced various health challenges over the years, including heart issues and diabetes. As per reports, she has a permanent pacemaker and has previously undergone heart stenting. This extensive medical history underscores the importance of her current hospitalization and the need for continuous support from her political base.
There are also considerations for her potential transfer for advanced medical care, with reports indicating that an air ambulance is on standby should her condition stabilize. Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, currently in London, has reached out to the public, urging them to pray for his mother’s recovery, reflecting the deep emotional ties and reverence the citizens hold for the former leader.
Zia served as Prime Minister for three non-consecutive terms and was previously imprisoned on corruption charges in 2018, a move widely seen as politically motivated. Following a change in the political landscape, she was released last year, and she has voiced her intention to be involved in the upcoming 2026 elections, positioning the BNP as a competitive force in the political arena.
Supporters waiting outside the hospital voiced their hope that Zia would soon recover and return to politics. Many view her as a pivotal figure in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Muhammad Yunus, the country’s interim leader, commended Zia’s role as a symbol of inspiration during a transitional phase for Bangladesh, highlighting her significance to the nation.
As prayers continue for Khaleda Zia’s health and recovery, her influence remains profound within the fabric of Bangladeshi society, with many looking to her as a leader during crucial times for the nation.
