The Novel Refuge: A Charitable Bookstore Making a Difference in the Community
In a small yet impactful corner of Laurel, a unique bookstore called The Novel Refuge has emerged as a beacon of hope and support for local refugees and immigrants. Established in October 2024, the bookstore offers a vast selection of literature, ranging from contemporary titles to timeless classics, as well as puzzles and games—all of which are sourced through donations. The proceeds from every sale are directed towards charitable initiatives aimed at improving the lives of families seeking refuge and rebuilding their lives in a new country.
Kathy Bittinger, a former educator and the executive director of The Novel Refuge, emphasized the multifaceted mission of the store. “Our aim is to provide funding for local refugee and immigrant services, while also diverting books from landfills and promoting education and literacy,” she stated. Bittinger’s commitment to this cause is deeply personal; her volunteer experiences with refugee communities inspired her to create a space where families could find essential support and resources during a challenging transitional period.
The unique business model of The Novel Refuge relies heavily on a dedicated team of volunteers who generously contribute their time and effort. Among them is Dorice Wang, who sought a family-friendly opportunity to give back to the community. “The fact that there was a store that could give back all profits to help the community was a wonderful way for us as a family to be fully involved,” Wang remarked, highlighting the strong sense of purpose that resonates among the volunteers.
Other volunteers share similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community support during difficult times. “This is a time when we need to look out for our neighbors, and this bookstore is a good way to do it,” said Katherine Leonard, another volunteer. Pearl Seidman remarked, “Working in a bookstore doesn’t get any better than that, but non-profits are critical in making our community stronger.”
As immigration issues have gained prominence in public discourse, Bittinger noted an increase in customer interest and support for the bookstore’s mission. “I think our customers genuinely care and want to help others,” she reflected. The Novel Refuge proudly positions itself as a safe space for individuals from all backgrounds, welcoming a diverse clientele through its doors.
Despite the challenges faced in launching and sustaining the bookstore, Bittinger finds motivation in the small, meaningful interactions with customers. She recounted a particularly touching moment when a young boy, newly arrived in the country, excitedly selected a book to take home, symbolizing hope and personal growth.
The Novel Refuge operates on a rotating model of support, donating a portion of its proceeds to different nonprofits every quarter. Currently, the bookstore is contributing its funds to the New Neighbors Interfaith Alliance, reinforcing its commitment to serving the community.
With its dual focus on literacy and humanitarian support, The Novel Refuge stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and social responsibility. Through the collective efforts of its volunteers and patrons, the bookstore not only enriches the lives of individuals and families but also actively contributes to the gradual nurturing of a more inclusive society.
