Laurens County School District 56 Implements Summer Meal Program to Combat Childhood Hunger
Amid growing concerns regarding food insecurity among children, Laurens County School District 56 is launching an initiative to provide free meals to children and teens during the summer months. Starting Monday, June 2, the district will offer complimentary meals for individuals aged 18 and under through its Child Nutrition Program. This program is designed to ensure that no child experiences hunger while school is out of session.
The initiative will feature two primary options for meal distribution: on-site lunches and weekly meal pickups at designated locations. This approach aims to accommodate varying needs within the community, thereby maximizing access to nutrition for children and families.
Families are encouraged to visit Clinton High School for on-site lunch services available from Monday to Thursday, between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. This location will serve as a hub where families can bring their children to enjoy lunch in a supportive environment, fostering a sense of community while addressing nutritional needs.
For families seeking alternatives to on-site dining, weekly meals can be picked up at Joanna-Woodson Elementary School. Each Monday, between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, families can collect seven days’ worth of lunches, providing a convenient option for those who may have scheduling constraints or prefer to enjoy their meals at home. It is important to note that although children do not need to be present for meal pickup, the program is exclusively for children and teens 18 and under.
The meals provided through this initiative come at no cost and require no registration or paperwork, ensuring that access is as straightforward as possible. This aligns with the district’s commitment to supporting all children in Laurens County, regardless of their background or circumstances.
The summer meal program is part of a broader federal initiative aimed at combating childhood hunger during the summer months when school meal programs are not in operation. Laurens County School District 56 is proud to participate in this initiative as an equal opportunity provider, reinforcing its role in the community and commitment to the well-being of its youth.
As awareness of childhood food insecurity continues to grow, programs like these serve as crucial lifelines for families in need, ensuring that children have access to nutritious meals even outside the traditional academic year. By actively engaging in efforts to support the health and well-being of its young residents, Laurens County School District 56 is taking significant steps towards a healthier future for all children in the area.
