At least 70 individuals have tragically lost their lives and approximately 30 others have been injured following a violent attack near Petite-Riviere, situated in Haiti’s vital Artibonite region. This figure, reported by the human rights organization Defenseurs Plus, substantially eclipses the official estimates, which had placed the death toll at around 16.

Local residents and officials relayed to media outlets that the violence commenced during the early hours of Sunday, affecting rural communities around Jean-Denis. The alarming escalation saw gang members sweeping through the area, resulting in the destruction of homes and significant fear among the populace.

According to Defenseurs Plus, the violence has resulted in the displacement of around 6,000 individuals. In parallel, the United Nations indicated that over 2,000 people had evacuated their residences in preceding days due to armed gang raids in the vicinity. Initial reports from law enforcement listed 16 fatalities and 10 injuries, while early assessments from civil protection authorities recounted 17 deaths and 19 injuries, predominantly among men.

In response to the alarming situation, a spokesperson from the United Nations Secretary-General conveyed that BINUH, the organization’s office in Haiti, is actively monitoring developments. The spokesperson noted the casualty estimates varied widely, ranging from 10 to 80 individuals. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Defenseurs Plus, in conjunction with the Collective to Save the Artibonite, criticized the apparent lack of security measures and accused authorities of abdicating their responsibilities to combat armed groups. This assertion underscores the deepening crisis in the Artibonite region, a significant agricultural sector that has increasingly experienced severe violence.

An audio message attributed to Gran Grif leader Luckson Elan suggested the attack was a retaliatory act against competing armed factions. The ongoing gang conflict has notably extended beyond the capital, Port-au-Prince, despite recent enhancements in policing and promises of increased international support to bolster Haiti’s security apparatus.

In a statement, Haiti’s National Police indicated they had dispatched three armored vehicles to the area, only to face challenges posed by roadblocks created by gang members. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officials found several houses in ruins, with the armed group having already retreated from the scene.

The wounded were swiftly transported to a local hospital, while the deceased were taken to morgues as police launched operations aimed at apprehending the fleeing gang members. Defenseurs Plus estimated that the violence led to the destruction of approximately 50 homes.

A UN report highlighted that near 20,000 lives have been lost in Haiti since 2021, with the death toll continuing to rise amidst an increasingly potent and independent constellation of armed gangs clashing with local authorities and community defense groups.

Gran Grif and Viv Ansanm, which encompasses numerous gangs throughout the capital, have been categorized as “terrorist” organizations by the United States, facing serious accusations of mass violence, robbery, and trafficking. This month, the US government announced a reward of up to million for information regarding these gangs’ financial operations.

The recent attack reflects a broader pattern of violence in the region, with previous incidents including a tragic assault in October 2024 that resulted in 115 fatalities in the town of Pont-Sonde, where armed individuals indiscriminately targeted residents. Currently, over 1.4 million people—approximately 12% of Haiti’s population—are displaced due to ongoing violence, exacerbating an already critical economic crisis and challenging food access in the nation.
