TSA Launches “Families on the Fly” Initiative to Enhance Airport Security Experience for Families

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has unveiled a new initiative titled “Families on the Fly,” aimed at improving the airport security screening process for families traveling with children. This program is particularly beneficial during peak travel periods, such as the summer season, when families often encounter challenges at airport checkpoints.

At Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), dedicated family lanes can now be found at lanes 14 and 15 of the main security checkpoint. These lanes are specifically designed to accommodate the unique needs of families, making it easier for parents to manage various items typically used when traveling with young children, including handheld electronic devices, strollers, and diaper bags.

Matt Davis, the TSA’s Federal Security Director for Utah, emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting families during air travel. “Traveling with children can be daunting, and we want to ease that burden,” he stated. “The ‘Families on the Fly’ campaign offers dedicated security lanes for families with children aged 12 and under, creating a more efficient and family-friendly screening process. Our goal is to make air travel secure, smart, and supportive for families.”

In addition to Salt Lake City International Airport, the “Families on the Fly” initiative is being implemented at several other major airports across the United States. Locations such as Orlando and Tampa International Airports in Florida, Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, John Wayne Airport in California, and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu are among the first to offer this dedicated screening service. The TSA has expressed intentions to extend these family-friendly lanes to more airports nationwide, which can significantly improve the travel experience for families.

The introduction of the “Families on the Fly” initiative reflects a broader understanding of the travel landscape, particularly the complexities involved when families journey together. As air travel continues to rebound post-pandemic, the TSA aims to address the needs of diverse travelers by enhancing operational efficiencies and ensuring security measures remain effective without compromising convenience, a crucial consideration for families on the go.
