Tunisian police have arrested prominent opposition figure Ahmed Nejib Chebbi amid an increasing crackdown on dissent in the North African nation, which once stood out as a symbol of emerging democracy following the Arab Spring. Chebbi’s arrest comes just days after he was handed a 12-year prison sentence on charges of plotting against the state, a trial criticized by human rights organizations as lacking credibility and political in nature.
According to family members, Chebbi was taken from his home last Thursday by law enforcement officials. His lawyer confirmed the arrest and remarked on the deteriorating political landscape in Tunisia, expressing concern over the growing climate of fear among political actors.
At 81, Chebbi is a co-founder of the National Salvation Front (FSN), Tunisia’s major opposition coalition. His outspoken criticism of President Kais Saied, who enacted a significant consolidation of power in 2021, has placed him at the center of a broader crackdown targeting opposition leaders, lawyers, and human rights activists. Since the Arab Spring uprisings that led to the ousting of longtime ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia has been working toward strengthening democratic practices, yet recent events suggest a troubling regression.

Just prior to his arrest, Chebbi publicly denounced his conviction during an interview, asserting the absence of legal legitimacy in the proceedings and condemning the current judicial system. He lamented that the judiciary has become subordinate to political authority, compromising its integrity.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the actions taken against Chebbi and others, labeling the trials as devoid of fairness and rife with violations of fundamental rights. Amnesty International emphasized that individuals should not face incarceration for exercising their rights, urging Tunisian authorities to reverse the unjust decisions made against political dissidents.
In light of these developments, the European Parliament has also called for the release of those imprisoned for expressing political opinions, positioning Tunisia’s actions against this backdrop of international concern over human rights.
