In Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, northern Ethiopia, the resurgence of daily life is evident as residents flock to streets, cafes, and markets. However, the effects of the previous conflict remain palpable, underscoring a complex path toward recovery and stability.

While the signing of a peace agreement has catalyzed some normalization, significant challenges linger. Among the foremost of these is the need for the disarmament and demobilization of over 200,000 members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Additionally, the political reintegration of the TPLF as a recognized party by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has yet to be fully realized, leaving a landscape fraught with uncertainty.

The internal dynamics within the TPLF have further complicated this situation. Leadership struggles between two factions have come to the forefront, with chairman Debretsion Gebremichael at the helm of one faction, while his former deputy, Getachew Reda, leads the other. Recently, tensions escalated when Reda and 16 additional members were expelled from the leadership, spotlighting the ongoing power struggles that impede political cohesion.

These internal disputes exacerbate the reconstruction efforts necessary to restore the region after years of conflict. The World Health Organization has reported that, at the war’s conclusion, a mere 3 percent of healthcare facilities in Tigray remained operational, highlighting the devastating impact the conflict had on essential services. The costs for reconstruction have been estimated at billion, indicating a shallow legal mechanism for the long-term recovery of Tigray’s population.

Looking ahead, the situation demands concerted national and international cooperation to navigate the political intricacies and humanitarian needs of the region. By addressing these complex issues, Ethiopia can not only work towards healing the wounds of war but also foster a future characterized by peace and development. The resilience of the Tigrayan people remains an inspiring narrative amidst these challenges, serving as a testament to their determination and hope for a brighter tomorrow.
