AFCON Shifts Back to 2-Year Cycle: Exciting Changes Ahead for African Football!

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will return to its traditional biennial format, according to an announcement from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This decision, which policymakers describe as a strategic move to bolster African football, comes after a thorough evaluation of feedback from various stakeholders within the sport.

Initially, CAF had planned to shift AFCON to a four-year cycle, a change that faced criticism and resistance from fans and football associations alike. As a testament to the value placed on player visibility and competitive integrity, the decision to reinstate the tournament to a two-year format underscores the importance of maintaining robust opportunities for African talent to showcase their skills on an international stage.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the organization’s commitment to promoting African football at a strategy conference held earlier this month in Cape Verde. He highlighted that the return to a biennial AFCON is aimed at advancing the interests of the 54 member associations and ensuring that African players, both domestic and international, are given ample opportunities for exposure and development. He noted that while the proposed CAF Nations League could serve as a biennial competition, it would take substantial time to generate the necessary revenue to support African football effectively.

The upcoming AFCON will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2027, with a series of subsequent tournaments scheduled for 2028, 2031, and 2033. Importantly, there will not be an AFCON tournament held in 2030 in order to uphold the tradition of not scheduling it during a World Cup year, further demonstrating CAF’s dedication to the integrity of both tournaments.

This decision marks a significant moment for the future of football in Africa, reinforcing the continent’s cultural and sporting identity. As AFCON continues to thrive as a competitive and unifying event, it emphasizes the boundless passion for football and the potential it holds to connect communities and inspire future generations.

By reinstating AFCON’s biennial status, CAF aims not only to enhance the visibility of African football on the global stage but also to foster a stronger, more prosperous footballing community across the continent. With the excitement building toward the 2027 tournament, the event promises to showcase the rich talent emerging from Africa, resonating well beyond the pitch.
