Katie Zacharia, the newly appointed White House press secretary under President Donald Trump, is facing scrutiny regarding her professional qualifications. Concerns have surfaced surrounding her claims of being a licensed attorney, prompting a public accountability nonprofit to file a formal complaint with the State Bar of California.
The complaint raises questions about the validity of Zacharia’s assertions that she is a lawyer, which could be considered a crime in California if proven false. According to her LinkedIn profile, she earned a degree from the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in 2011. However, doubts persist regarding whether she holds a valid license to practice law, as she has implied.
Michelle Kuppersmith, head of the Washington, D.C.-based Campaign for Accountability, stated that Zacharia has represented herself as a lawyer to enhance her credibility, particularly as a legal commentator and now as a White House spokesperson. Her organization has urged California’s regulatory agency to conduct an investigation into whether Zacharia has misrepresented her legal credentials and to take action if necessary.
Zacharia, who has made numerous appearances on conservative media platforms like Fox News and Newsmax, began her role as White House press secretary on a Tuesday. During her inaugural press briefing, her delivery was marked by hesitation and repetition, as she primarily focused on expressing gratitude to Trump and reading from a prepared statement.
During an interaction with reporters outside the White House, Zacharia referenced her time in China, suggesting it was where she passed the bar exam. This statement is intriguing, as the nature of China’s legal system typically requires its citizens to obtain a license after passing a challenging national examination. For foreigners, practicing law in China is contingent on having substantial experience from their home countries, a condition that may not apply to Zacharia.
Her biography on the Trumpettes USA Inc. website claims she previously served as outside counsel for the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation while working in Beijing. Her work history includes an associate position at the Zhong Lun Law Firm from 2011 to 2013, followed by more recent roles, including a senior communications adviser at the Trump Media and Technology Group.
Despite the scrutiny, Zacharia maintains that she practices international transaction law and possesses the necessary credentials to support her claims. She has spent recent months as a communications adviser at the Department of Homeland Security and has increasingly engaged with media entities related to Trump’s ventures.
The unfolding situation highlights the layers of complexity surrounding professional qualifications and the expectations placed on public figures.
