Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized for three weeks due to double pneumonia, has expressed his gratitude to his supporters worldwide in a recent audio message, marking his first public communication since his hospitalization began. This period represents the longest absence from public life in his papacy, which commenced 12 years ago.

The message was recorded at Rome’s Gemelli hospital and broadcast during the nightly rosary prayer at St. Peter’s Square, where a congregation had gathered to pray for his health. Speaking softly in Spanish with discernible breath difficulty, the 88-year-old pontiff thanked his well-wishers, stating, “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers for my health from the square, I accompany you from here. May God bless you and the Virgin protect you. Thank you.”

Since Francis’ hospitalization on February 14, hundreds of pilgrims have congregated in St. Peter’s Square nightly to show their support, applauding when they heard the pope’s heartfelt message. The Vatican reported that on the night prior, he enjoyed a “calm night” of rest, awakening just before 8 AM.

Initially, the pope had been diagnosed with bronchitis; however, the condition escalated into double pneumonia affecting both lungs, necessitating an evolving treatment regimen that has garnered global attention. Double pneumonia, while serious, underscores the rigorous medical care available to him.

During this time, the Vatican has committed to providing updates on Francis’s condition, with reports indicating that he remains in “stable” condition for three consecutive days. However, the prognosis is still cautiously reserved, as medical professionals continue to monitor how his health might develop.

Despite missing the formal Ash Wednesday celebrations marking the onset of Lent, Francis was able to partake in a blessing from his private suite. His absence from public appearances has led to significant speculation regarding his health, although he has faced similar challenges over the past two years. Notably, his history of lung infections, stemming from pleurisy in his youth, adds to scrutiny regarding his ability to fulfill the demanding role of the papacy.

In response to his absence from public services, senior Cardinal Michael Czerny has been appointed to lead the mass for the first Sunday of Lent in Francis’s stead. As many await news of the pontiff’s recovery and potential public appearances, the global community continues to offer prayers and support, reflecting the resilience and unwavering faith that characterize the Catholic Church.
