Gaza City, Gaza Strip – Prior to the recent escalation of violence in Gaza, 24-year-old Shurouq Khaira was a determined athlete, diligently training for her track races. For Shurouq, athletics was not merely a pastime; it was an essential component of her identity. In 2016, she claimed a national title at the youth championships, and her ambition was to represent her homeland, Palestine, on the global stage.
Shurouq yearned for the world to recognize that those in Gaza are not merely survivors of conflict, but aspirational individuals who dream and achieve. Her aspirations, however, were abruptly curtailed on November 19, 2023—the onset of a devastating conflict that has upended countless lives, with more than 73,400 Palestinians reportedly killed.
In the initial weeks of the conflict, Gaza City was subjected to relentless bombing. Shurouq was at home in the Daraj neighborhood when a shell struck her family’s residence. While she survived, the impact resulted in the tragic amputation of her right leg below the knee. In a heart-wrenching turn of fate, her father, who had instilled in her a passion for sports, also lost both of his legs in the attacks.
Following this life-altering incident, Shurouq faces an ongoing battle with daily tasks that were once trivial. Sheltering in a tent due to the destruction of their home, she experiences significant challenges navigating through the dark at night, fearful of stumbling. The harsh living conditions have compounded her feelings of fear and insecurity. “Though I endure pain and darkness, I strive to remain hopeful,” she expressed, highlighting the enduring resilience that characterizes many in Gaza.
Currently awaiting a prosthetic leg which could facilitate mobility, Shurouq confronts additional obstacles in accessing physical therapy across the Gaza Strip. The limited transportation options make it exceedingly difficult for her to travel, necessitating long journeys on crutches or hopping on one leg to reach her appointments—often resulting in missed sessions.
The ongoing conflict and its ramifications have led to a staggering number of amputations, exceeding 6,000 cases since the war erupted, as noted by the Gaza Ministry of Health. Many of those affected are children, marking this crisis as one of the most tragic sources of child amputations in recent history. Medical professionals attribute the surge in amputation cases to a collapsing healthcare infrastructure, where critical supplies for surgeries are alarmingly low.
Despite these immense challenges, the community of healthcare providers in Gaza persists in their efforts. Some have resorted to devising makeshift prosthetic devices from local materials as a temporary solution, though these often fail to provide adequate support, leading to further complications for patients.
Mental health is another crucial aspect profoundly influenced by the crisis. The strain on patients, particularly youth, can adversely affect self-esteem and social interactions.
